Tensions are running high ahead of the Copa del Rey final between Real Madrid and Barcelona, but not just because of the rivalry on the field. Real Madrid recently skipped a pregame press conference and training session, protesting comments made by referee Ricardo De Burgos Bengoetxea and VAR official Pablo González Fuertes. These officials voiced concerns about Madrid’s ongoing criticism of refereeing decisions, particularly those amplified through the club’s media channels.

While rumors swirled about a potential boycott, Madrid firmly denied any intention to skip the final, emphasizing respect for the fans and the spirit of the game. The club, however, condemned the referees’ remarks as “unacceptable” and suggested they could undermine the integrity of the event.

On the other side, Spanish referees defended their professionalism, highlighting the personal toll public criticism has taken, including online harassment and even impacts on their families. RFEF president Rafael Louzan called for calm, urging all parties to focus on the spectacle of the final rather than the controversy.

As Madrid and Barcelona prepare to face off, the drama off the pitch has added another layer of intensity to an already massive fixture.
