Steve Angeli to Transfer from Notre Dame After Spring Quarterback Battle

Notre Dame quarterback Steve Angeli has entered the NCAA transfer portal following the conclusion of the team’s spring practices. Angeli, who will be a junior in the upcoming season, faced stiff competition for the starting role from redshirt freshman CJ Carr and sophomore Kenny Minchey. With only one year of eligibility remaining, Angeli’s decision to transfer comes as he seeks more playing time elsewhere.

During his time with the Fighting Irish, Angeli served as a backup to quarterbacks Sam Hartman and Riley Leonard. He appeared in 21 games, completing 58 of 80 passes for 772 yards, 10 touchdowns, and one interception, boasting a 72.5% completion rate. Notably, Angeli started in the 2023 Sun Bowl, leading Notre Dame to a 40-8 victory over Oregon State with 232 passing yards and three touchdowns.

Angeli’s departure leaves Notre Dame with Carr and Minchey vying for the starting quarterback position. Head coach Marcus Freeman has yet to name a starter, and a final decision is expected closer to the start of the season.

As Angeli explores new opportunities, his experience and performance at Notre Dame make him a valuable asset for programs in need of a seasoned quarterback.
