South Alabama’s standout quarterback, Gio Lopez, is set to enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to sources. The redshirt freshman, who led the Jaguars to a 7-6 record in 2024, is expected to be one of the most sought-after quarterbacks in the upcoming transfer window, which runs from April 16 to April 25.

Lopez had a breakout season in 2024, completing 66% of his passes for 2,559 yards and 18 touchdowns, while also rushing for 465 yards and seven scores. His performance included a record-setting 494-yard total offense game against North Texas in the season opener. Despite an early-season toe injury, he returned to lead the Jaguars to their first-ever bowl victory, earning MVP honors in the 68 Ventures Bowl.

Initially, Lopez had decided to remain at South Alabama after the winter portal window. However, renewed interest from major programs has influenced his decision to explore transfer opportunities. Sources indicate that North Carolina and Wake Forest have already been in contact with Lopez, while Georgia, LSU, and Ohio State had shown interest earlier in the offseason.

As a former three-star recruit from Madison, Alabama, Lopez’s combination of passing accuracy and mobility makes him a valuable asset for programs seeking an experienced and dynamic quarterback. His entry into the portal adds to the competitive landscape of quarterback transfers this spring.

Lopez’s decision marks a significant shift for South Alabama, as they look to fill the void left by one of the program’s most promising talents. His next destination will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike, as he brings a proven track record and high potential to whichever program he joins.
